This is a song I wrote last fall. October to be exact. There is this spot out in the woods behind Rider University (where I went to school) called the pit. The tree line starts just behind the Lake House parking lot and leads into a massive wooded area you can explore for miles. My freshman year I was hanging out with my friend in the woods who told me about this place, the pit. He took me too it and sure enough the name fit the spot. It looked like the foundation for a building that was never finished. A rectangular hole in the ground about four feet deep was outlined with cement blocks and had a floor that was overgrown with weeds. It was an amazing spot, but me being me, I thought we could improve upon it. We gathered some of our other friends and started to clean the place up. We pulled the weeds and dug out the mulch on the ground. We even uncovered a cement floor underneath. Another friend built up a tee pee wall out of branches and finally we used extra cement blocks to build a fire pit. I brought some old beach chairs with me from home one semester to add as well, and soon enough the makeover of the pit was complete. My friend who had showed me the pit graduated but I continued to use the space with others. On brisk fall days we would head out there to lounge in style under the sun in our own little fort. We would go out at night and set up a fire, roasting marshmallows and drinking beer. I always loved to bring my guitar out there with me. Something about sitting under the trees or stars or whatever was over our head that day, always inspired me to write. There was one day when we headed out there and I had this tune stuck in my head that I didn't know what to do with. I grabbed my guitar and thought that maybe the pit could give me some inspiration. we sat out there for several hours and sure enough "October High" was born. I still remember that moment vividly every time I play the song. I can see the trees, I can smell the sky and I can transport myself back to that October day in the pit.
