With everything going on in the world today, Miss Saigon could not be coming back to Broadway at a better time.
Miss Saigon takes place during the Vietnam War. The show tells the epic love story between an American GI and a poor Vietnamese girl who find each other amidst a war torn country. In an incredible sequence in Act 2 "Kim's Nightmare," we see the dramatized version of the fall of Saigon and the attempted evacuation of an entire country. At the US Embassy American soldiers try to process "the gooks" as quickly as possible but are unable to let everyone in. In a devastating closing to the number, the final helicopter takes off with all the Americans but leaves behind many of the Vietnamese people who are about to be taken over by a communist power. Amongst this group are women, children and the poor Vietnamese girl who fell in love with a solider.
In today's world tragedies like this are still happening.
Getting the opportunity to work on this piece of theatre at this time in America is one of my proudest moments as an actor. It is hard to know what to do in trying times but sharing ideas is a great start. Theatre is simply a strong clear voice, and all the power in change comes from a strong clear voice. As an artist it is our job to help our audience experience empathy. We put ourselves in other people's shoes for a few hours a night and reveal their souls to a group of people. It is our job to bring a story to life and to expose the existence of people who are different from us. It is hard to know what to do right now in our country. People are scared and confused and don't know how to help. We can stand up, we can march and we can speak our mind. Miss Saigon may take place during the Vietnam War but it is the story of people who are different. And right now there could not be a better time to help others understand those who are different from us.
I urge you to see Miss Saigon and I urge you to keep speaking your mind in the strongest, clearest voice you have.
